Improving shipping efficiency with road-rail intermodal transport
The most efficient freight transport solutions offer door-to-door shipping services at competitive rates with unmatched productivity. But whilst no single mode of transportation has the capacity to ensure such dynamic options, intermodal freight transport combines the best of rail and road shipping in order to achieve this goal. Here’s what you need to know about intermodal transport:
What is intermodal freight transport exactly?
Intermodal freight combines the best of both worlds: rail and road. It takes the strongest and finest characteristics of the two very different modes of transportation and molds them together in order to offer top shipping options in terms of pricing, reliability and timing. By mixing the two, intermodal can ensure that customers enjoy optimized door-to-door transport at the best possible price.
Rail and road transport complement each other well. Rail freight transport is the ideal choice for long distances, whilst trucks offer much more flexibility in terms of freedom of movement, and can reach destinations which rail cannot. The exchange of freights between the two modes of transportation is done in a swift and efficient manner. But besides loading and unloading services, intermodal shipping also offers the possibility to store goods. Merchandise can be retained and safeguarded in either closed or open-air warehouses, in specialized containers, so no damage whatsoever can be done to the materials that are to be transported.
Advantages of intermodal freight transport
Increased cargo security
The more time the transported cargo spends on the railroad rather than on the main road, the better. Rail is a much safer option when it comes to shipping, as specialized containers are used to transport different types of materials. Rail freight forwarding is also less prone to external hazards, like meteorological factors or road accidents, when cargo can get damaged. During the intermodal transport process, operators tend to transport the cargo as much as possible via rail and limit road transportation to the minimum.
Sustainability
Intermodal rail freight transport can be an efficient strategy to fight climate change! By using the transportation option that is the most fuel- and energy-efficient and by making the majority of the journey via rail, global greenhouse emissions are greatly reduced.
Competitive rates
With both transport options offering the best of their services in a single pricing package, shipping costs also become optimal. Intermodal partnerships are great for all parties, but the ones who benefit most of these solutions are, of course, the clients, who receive complete and exhaustive freight and logistics services at the best price.
Great solution for truck driver shortage
The trucking industry is negatively affected by driver shortages on an ongoing basis. In the case of intermodal transport merely a small portion of the entire shipping journey is made via road, which means that less drivers are required than if the entire transportation process would’ve needed to be done with the help of trucks.
Reduced road congestion
Since the largest part of the shipping process is made via rail and there aren’t many trucks used (mostly only for transporting from the intermodal terminal to the client’s warehouse), road congestion is also greatly reduced. A single trainload can have a weight of approximately 1600 net tons, which is the equivalent of 40-42 truckloads. That’s how many trucks are taken off the main road, if a single train with maximum wagon capacity is used during the shipping process.
MMV Rail Romania’s efforts to maximize intermodal freight transport
At MMV Rail Romania we are well aware of the undeniable benefits that intermodal freight transport offers. This is why we have been working hard behind the scenes, making feasibility studies and scouting locations to find a suitable place in Romania to establish a hub that aims to offer such services. Partnering up with organizations that share our vision is the next step in our plans and we are very hopeful that we can find open-minded collaborators that will help our dreams become a reality. So stay tuned and follow us on Facebook and LinkedIn to see how this project evolves in the future!
