Technology, sustainability, and the future of rail freight
The rail freight industry is evolving as logistics companies invest in modern equipment, digital technologies, and more efficient operational systems.
To understand how these developments are shaping the sector, we spoke with Kinga Mădărășan, General Director of PSP Cargo Group Romania, about the initiatives that will influence the company’s operations in the coming years.
Her perspective highlights how digitalization, fleet modernization, and sustainability are becoming central themes in the future of rail logistics.
Digitalization in Rail Freight Operations
One of the key projects currently underway at PSP Cargo Group involves the implementation of a new digital system designed to monitor operational resources and costs.
Digital tools are becoming increasingly important in rail logistics, where operational efficiency depends on accurate data and detailed cost control.
The system will track several important operational components, including:
- locomotive utilization
- wagon allocation
- energy consumption
- infrastructure usage fees
- additional operational costs
According to Kinga Mădărășan, digitalization allows companies to gain a clearer understanding of their operational structure.
“Digital systems provide better visibility over how resources are used and how costs are generated,” she explains.
The company plans to complete the implementation of this system by the end of the year.
Modern Locomotives and Environmental Standards

Fleet modernization also plays an important role in the company’s long-term strategy.
New locomotive technologies offer improved operational performance while meeting stricter environmental standards.
PSP Cargo Group continues to upgrade its fleet through partnerships with locomotive manufacturers and suppliers.
Recent developments include the replacement of older locomotives with newer Vectron models, as well as a contract with Softronic Craiova for two newly built locomotives scheduled to enter service later this year.
“These locomotives meet high environmental standards and improve operational performance,” says Kinga Mădărășan.
Multimodal Transport and Sustainable Logistics
Rail freight transport plays a critical role in the transition toward more sustainable logistics systems.
Compared to road freight transport, rail transport offers significant advantages in terms of energy efficiency and emissions reduction.
PSP Cargo Group continues to develop multimodal transport solutions, combining rail transport with road and terminal operations.
Being part of Waberer’s Group provides access to additional transport capacity and operational scale, supporting the development of more complex and flexible logistics solutions.
These solutions allow logistics operators to move freight more efficiently while reducing environmental impact.
Investing in People and Organizational Development

Alongside technological development, PSP Cargo Group continues to invest in professional training and organizational development.
Management training programs, operational development initiatives, and leadership training all contribute to strengthening the company’s internal capabilities.
“People remain the most important element of any logistics organization,” Kinga explains.
Continuous professional development ensures that teams remain prepared to manage the complexity of modern rail freight operations.
Looking Ahead
The rail freight industry continues to evolve as companies adapt to new technologies, environmental priorities, and operational expectations.
For PSP Cargo Group, the future will depend on combining technological innovation with operational discipline and strong partnerships.
As Kinga Mădărășan concludes, companies that remain adaptable and focused on long-term development will be best positioned to succeed in the evolving logistics landscape.
